Why have Mixed Martial Arts Become So Popular?

If you’ve watched television at all, it’s likely that you’ve heard of the mixed martial arts, or the MMA, movement. This sport is a mix of wrestling, boxing, and martial arts (hence the name), and has become wildly popular over the past few years. What’s the appeal? Here are a few reasons.
It’s something different. MMA is such a unique sport that many people find themselves to be drawn to it. It’s not the same old, same old; the people are different, they’re pulling off different things, and it’s a lot more entertaining than some of the related sports. It’s something new, so people are automatically drawn to it.
It’s not fake, and thus a bit rougher than other similar sports. Many people have accused professional wrestling, specifically, of being fake (and with good reason, to be honest). Some people joke that it’s “soap operas for men” because of their focus on storylines and such. That being said, MMA is nothing like that. It’s a rough and tumble sport; and even though the fighters each have their own background, it’s more driven by the sport itself than the stories and the drama surrounding it.
It takes a great amount of skill. This is probably the main reason that people are drawn to MMA fighting. Even though boxing and wrestling definitely take some skill, MMA fighting is such a unique sport that it takes a special person with a wide variety of skills and training in order to be able to do it well. They fight in ways that many of us haven’t seen, and those skills shock and awe the audience.
Have you watched MMA fighting at all? Does it appeal to you, or do you prefer the old classics like wrestling and boxing?
